The Lightner Museum is the perfect place to go when it’s raining and specializes in everything Victorian from taxidermied animals to intricate cut glassware, furniture and everything over the top that you can imagine…it’s an amazing museum to say the least. Founded by Chicago Publisher Otto Lightner in 1948, the museum houses Lightner’s unique collection of Americana and is housed in the former Alcazar Hotel, built in 1888 by Henry Flagler, a railroad magnate. In it’s day the Spanish Renaissance Revival hotel was and still is an opulent structure that included the world’s largest indoor swimming pool, Turkish and Russian steam baths, tennis courts and a gymnasium.

Villa Zorayda Museum

Webster Smith using a unique construction method of poured concrete and crushed coquina shells, the architectural details replicated Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. After being a personal residence for 20 years, the building was transformed into the Zorayda Club, a restaurant and club where prominent guest enjoyed dining, dancing, gambling, socializing and even a speakeasy during prohibition. After Smith’s death in 1913, the building and part of his collection was sold to Abraham Mussallem who was an authority on oriental rugs and Egyptian artifacts that you can experience today. The Mussallem-Byles family still own and operate this fascinating museum that features priceless antique collections of both Smith and Musallem.

Pirate & Treasure Museum

This museum offers an exciting and educational experience for all ages and transports you back in time over 300 years to the Golden Age of Piracy. The museum is about 5,000 square feet and houses the personal collection of Pat Croce who moved the museum from Key West, Florida. St. Augustine and the Spanish fort, the Castillo de San Marcos, was visited by famous Pirates such as Sir Francis Drake and Robert Searles.

The Old City Jail

Built by Henry Flagler in 1891 to keep the peace in St. Augustine, this jail housed up to 72 inmates at a time. For nearly 60 years (until 1953), the jail served as the St. Johns County facility for petty thieves and hardened criminals alike. Take a tour of the maximum security cells where you’ll meet Sheriff Joe Perry (portrayed by an Actor) who will show you how executions were held on the gallows. The maximum security cells housed was reserved for the most infamous criminals.
